Responses to Photos

Which of these photos has the most important details?

I feel the first photo is the most telling of the chaos and devestation that shows the aftermath of this tragedy.

What do you notice in the photos that you would include in your story?
The fact that there is still order among the chaos

Write a sentence describing the scene in the "best" photo.
Even in a time of crisis, it's funny how an identification badge can give comfort. Just knowing this woman helping out in the makeshift hospital is aptly qualified, makes everything look a little better. There is hope.

Heres Some Stuff I've Been Slowly Digesting

Over a year ago, the Heartland institute published a list of 500 scientists whose work proves that there is no reason to fear global warming because it is a completely natural earth cycle. The institute article states seven main points the author interprets from research papers the scientists wrote. These points include agriculture, sea levels and storm patterns, among other things.

Here's the article

I have gone through some of the list and found a few names from schools in the Northwest I'll slowly update the list as I go through it.

Anderson, P.M., University of Washington
Balco, Gregory, University of Washington
Bartlein, P.J., University of Oregon
Brubaker, Linda, University of Washington
Clark, Douglas H., University of Washington

I've been using Wikipedia as my jumping off point. There is so much information, but even the page about global warming controversy debates almost every point skeptics make.

There's more, and I'll continue to update. I'll try to get more this afternoon and some tomorrow morning.

Story Proposals

During class Tuesday, we discussed several story ideas regarding the environment. Here are my ideas.

Proposal 1: Mopeds
My wife and I recently bought a moped, effectively reducing our fuel consumption from about five gallons per week to less than one. I have also noticed an increase in the amount of mopeds around town.

I would like to know if there is an actual increase in moped sales and why. I would want to find sales numbers to start with, then compare and contrast them with car sales numbers. I would also need to find moped owners, sales people, and any others that could provide insight as to what this means to global climate change.

Here are some similar stories recently published. Most seem to focus on the economic and financial benefits, and less so on the environmental impact.

My Opinion as of September 2, 2008

I believe my actions and the actions of other humans affect the world's climate and weather patterns. I do not know the exact consequences of those actions, but time will tell.

I understand there is a natural cycle to weather patterns on this planet, but these patterns cannot predict the future. I believe the climate is changing, and always will. I believe energy overhaul is a necessity, and alternate sources would accomplis that goal.

I wonder what the rest of the world thinks. I know many other countries produce large amounts of greenhouse gasses, and I wonder - what are their policies? Is this sudden attention to climate change an American cultural issue, or is it a concern to other people around the globe?
